Teleferika - former port for bauxite transportation
Wed, Nov 12, 2008
Once you arrive to Rabac and settle comfortably in one of our hotels, I would recommend a walk along the beach or for those of adventurous spirit, trekking while enjoying beautiful scenery. When walking towards centre of Rabac, you will see a building on the rocks close to the sea on the other side of the bay and you will probably ask yourself what that might be. I will tell you now and when you visit us, you may take a walk to Teleferika.
This photo shows Teleferika, ruins of former port for bauxite transportation. Teleferika was built during Italian regime, and was connected by a nine kilometers long cable way with a small town Cere, located in the back of Labin, where bauxite had been exploited extensively between two World Wars. The port had not been used after World War II anymore and the cable way had been dismantled.
Regardless of the fact that the port had not been used for so long, we had not forgotten it. For the past eight years we have been marking the beginning of each new tourist season by traditional rowboat race named Voga Teleferika. Rowboat race takes place on the route quayside- Teleferika. Let me tell you, I have participated in one of those races and it was quite an exhausting rowing route
However, with delicious grilled pilchards and a local party that welcome participants after competition, you seem to forget everything rather soon!
