Rabac

How Rabac got its name?

There are two different versions of the story and first we will tell you the more imaginative one. According to an old legend, Rabac got its name from sparrows (vrabac). They used to quench their thirst in a small creek which joined the sea in a corner of the Long Beach, as it was the only source of drinking water in the entire bay, which is said to had been discovered precisely by those little birds.

The second version is more reliable (therefore, less interesting:-): it is said that the town was named by Carlo de Franceschi in the 19th century. The key word in this interpretation is “Rab”, the island of origin of the de Franceschi family, which owned a number of holdings in the area of Rabac.

How Labin got its name?

“Town on a hill” or “high settlement” is the meaning of Labin’s ancient name “Albona” or “Alvona” from which the modern name of this picturesque town derived, built on a hill above Rabac. The town’s old name is of Illyric-Celtic origin. It was founded in the 4th century BC by the Kelts on the place of an already existing stronghold, which was according to historians built by the Illyrians in the 11th century BC.
