13th Asparagus Festivity in Kaštel
Wed, Apr 7, 2010
You already had the opportunity of reading about the asparagus, our spring fairy, so today I am introducing Šparogada (Asparagus Festivity) which will be held in Kaštel near Buje for the 13th time. The weekend from 9 to 11 April will be truly eventful. So let’s get started! Indoor soccer will take place on Friday, 9 April, at 5 pm and a party with plenty of dancing will start at 10 pm. Quo Vadis and Koktels bands will be in charge of the entertainment. The manifestations held on Saturday will begin with the bowling tournament (pentaque), followed by paintball and the asparagus picking competition with an appealing prize “Špaleta for the longest asparagus” (špaleta meaning the pork hand).
I particularly single out the exhibition of asparagus dishes which will be prepared by the local caterers and Kaštel housewives, starting at 7 pm, which will be, alongside the award-winning wines, tasted at 7:30 pm. After drinking and eating, there will be plenty of dancing with the Mambo Kings Band. A hike along the Kaštel hills will surely be welcome on Sunday, starting at 9:30 am, and you will also have the opportunity of enjoying the photography and artefacts as well as the old-timer automobile exhibition. The holy mass – ottava will begin at 11 am. The megašparogada manifestation will follow at 6 pm – wild asparagus prepared in the Kaštel style and a party with the Bullea Folk band as the entertainers starting at 9 pm.
I have also learned that the old Egyptians knew how to appreciate its wealth: apart form eating it, they offered the wild asparagus growing along River Nile to the Gods, as a gift, and even asparagus paintings were found in the pharaons’ tombs. Therefore, spend the upcoming weekend in one of Valamar’s hotels in Rabac, book a room and participate in the 13th Asparagus Festivity in Kaštel.
