The Native Museum of Porec – second with the project “UNESCO Localities at the Adriatic“
We would often, especially in summer, mention the Native Museum of Porec on our blog and announce the activities that would take place in its organization. The Native Museum of Porec it the oldest museum in Istria, and it was established in 1884. The main task of the museum is collection and research of civilisation and cultural artefacts of the Porec area and their presentation to the public, and a few days ago it was recognized by the European Union Committee of the Regions for the “UNESCO Localities at the Adriatic” project.
The Project was launched in 2003, and the main goal was creation of the computer data base on eight early Christian archaeological sites in Ravenna and the cathedral complex of St. Euphrasy’s Basilica in Porec. A large number of cultural, university and town institutions from Italy participated in the project, and experts from Istria have significantly contributed to the creation of the data base on mosaics.
The Manager of the Native Museum, Elena Uljancic Vekic, said for the regional daily newspaper “Glas Istre” (Voice of Istria): “This is a big award for us and we are honoured that we had the opportunity to participate in the European project. This is the most important European award in culture, and Porec and its Native Museum have been placed at the very top of the list.”
The Manager added that the museum of Porec coordinated the entire story, and the conservators from Pula have executed the expert part of the work. She also stressed that the important experienced was acquired and announced participation in two similar forthcoming projects.
Congratulations again to the Native Museum of Porec and to everyone who has participated in the project.
