A short time timeline of a long and turbulent history of the city of Porec
2nd. century BC - Roman castrum was built in a small peninsula (400 m long, 200 m wide), on which the historic centre is still situated.
1st. century - Emperor Augustus’s Empire; castrum is officially proclaimed the city and it is included in Roman colony Colonia Iulia Parentium.
3rd century - The city has an organized Christian community and early Christian church complex and at the turn of the 6th and 7th centuries it becomes Episcopal centre.
476. Fall of the Roman Empire; the city is since then under different rulers; first in a line are Ostrogoths.
539. Byzantine rule begins.
6st. century- Euphrasian basilica was built.
Kraj 6. stolje?a - Arrival of Croatians in the area of Porec, building of the first permanent settlement in about 620.
Nakon 788. The city is under Franks rule.
12. century- A short period of independence followed, and then Aquileian Patriarchs begin to reign.
1267. Porec comes under the rule of Venetian Republic, which rules for more than five centuries.
1354. The city is devastated by the people of Genova.
16st. and 17st. century. In Porec the plague declined the number of citizens.
End of 17st. century. Grad and surroundings is settled by the settlers from South Dalmatia.
End of 18st. century. Napoleon takes over Porec, and so does Austria in 1797.
From 1861. Porec was the capital of Istria, the centre of Istrian Parliament, with schools and administrative and juridical institutions.
1920-1943. Porec is again under the rule of Italy, and in 1944 it was destroyed by bombing.
10. 09. 1943. It again becomes part of Croatia.
