Po rec dolphin - Swimming festival for all generations
Tue, Sep 2, 2008
There is no single citizen of Porec, either in older or in younger generation, who has not completed, once in a lifetime, the shortest lap of Porec Dolphin at least. Porec Dolpinh is the whole-day recreational swimming festival at sea, held traditionally at the well known town beach in Porec, in front of the St. Nichola’s island. This year it will be held on September 6 and 7 (Saturday and Sunday).
The swimming style is not determined, all styles are allowed as well as swimming equipment – fins, inflatable beach mattresses etc. What matters is participation.
I participate in Porec Dolpin every year and I admit openly that I complete only the 1,500 m lap which is the shortest lap being awarded with a bronze medal and a T-shirt with the words: I did it! (in Croatian: Uspio sam!).
The next lap is long 3,000 m. Those who complete it are awarded with a silver medal, and not everyone can do this. The swimming track is not straight any more, it turns toward the Saint Nichola’s island. And here there is the sea (as we say when there are waves). Swimmers who completed laps for bronze and silver medals are returned to the start position by boat.
Those who complete the most demanding lap of 5,000 m, swimming around the whole Saint Nichola’s island, are awarded with a golden medal Golden dolphin. After swimming grilled pilchards will be served to all participants of this festival.
Next year 10th Pore Dolphin will be held. This event emerged from cooperation with the Hungarian county Somogy and the town of Sziofok (the Balathon Lake) at which similar swimming marathon has been also organised.
