Giostra
For all citizens of Porec and their guests who wish to have a peek at the past and see what Porec looked like in the old days, the Porec Tourist Board and Studio 53 have prepared for September 14th and 15th the First Porec History Festival under the title “Giostra”.
How did people live, work, socialize and have fun in Porec? What did Porec look like in those ancient and long forgotten times? The event organisers say that exactly these questions inspired them to try and bring back a part of the history and organise this festival during which they will once again bring to life the ancient year of 1672.
Namely, in the 17th century a folk festivity under the name “Fiera franca triduana” used to take place in Porec every year on St. Michael’s Day (May 8th), and as a part of the festivity competitions were organised in crossbow, dancing as well as other folk games. This festival was named after Giostra, a horse race that represented the main event of the whole festivity.
The organisers have announced the staging of a historic horse race for next year, and for this year’s Giostra they announce the revival of a forgotten tradition. So you can expect to see various entertainers, jugglers, ensigns and stiltwalkers walking down the streets of Porec dressed in clothing from those old, ancient times. The procession will be accompanied by music and dances from the 17th century.
One more interesting fact, and that is the regulation of the statute of the town of Porec, dating from the year 1364 that prescribes that a folk festivity be held regularly with a special paragraph where is says that the festivity needs to be held from that year on for all time, so the organisers hope and believe that this festivity will, based on this story, become a tradition.
