Short review of the Pula Film Festival
Wed, Jul 18, 2007
Pula Film Festival is taking place in the Pula amphitheater and it is to last until July 21st. In a week’s time, i.e. July 23rd, the second great Istrian film event is starting - Motovun Film Festival. We will say something more on Motovun next week, and now shortly on the current festival in Pula. The program of this year’s film festival in Pula is divided into a few categories, but the real reason why most of the visitors hurl to Arena is the national programme showing films of Croatian production that have been filmed in the last year.
A few years ago the Croatian film production finally snapped out of its lethargy that dominated in the 90ies, and since then it has been given a number of international awards. That is also why the fact that there’s a growing interest among the Croatian audience for national films as well as the fact that Arena was packed with specators in the first three days of the festival don’t come as a surprise to us. On the first day of the festival, July 15th, “Play Me a Love Song” was shown, a comedy-drama from film director Goran Kulenovi?. It has won the sympathy of the audience and has been given the average audience grade 4,56. (photo gallery from the film). The second day of the festival was reserved for the romantic drama “True miracle” from film director Lukas Nola, starring Barbara Nola, the film director’s wife, and Rade Šerbedžija. (gallery).
I haven’t seen the first two movies, so I am in no position to judge them yet, but I’ve seen the movie that was shown on the third day of the festival -”Armin” by Ognjen Svili?i? and I must admit I really liked it. It is a drama with elements of humour, the story is based on the relationship between a middle-aged father and his 13-year-old son. The father wants his son to become a successful actor and decides to go with him from a little village in Bosnia to Zagreb, for an audition. On their way to Zagreb they get into numerous tragicomic situations. Audience in the crowded Arena received the film with great appreciation and awarded it with a thunderous applause.
