Vrbnicka zlahtina
We have already written about wine varieties from our destinations, especially of Istrian Malvasia, and our presentation agenda for today is a variety from the island of Krk, where there are two of our camps (Ježevac and Politin) and a hotel (Koralj).
It is a well-known variety from the island of Krk, zlahtina, of course. This wine variety is specific because it can successfully grow only in the winegrowing area of Krk, that is, the Vrbnik field, and a high-quality, dry, white wine, vrbnicka zlahtina, is made from it. Several producers and cooperatives in Vrbnik are filling it.
The variety arrived to Krk at the end of the 19th century, and it didn’t reach Vrbnik field until the period between the First and Second World War. The name of the wine zlahtina derived from an adjective zlahten, which in Slavic dialects means noble.
The wine is of light yellow colour, gentle aroma and fine characteristic taste. The freshness that a more severe climate gives to Zlahtina is a characteristic of northern territory of the Adriatic coast, to which this variety of wine has adapted.
The main characteristics of the variety have been preserved in the wine of a lovely and lively taste, and although it may not satisfy more demanding wine-lovers, its softness, mildness, drinkable and refreshing taste, as well as none the less acceptable price, contribute that this wine is often present on tables. Besides zlahtina produced by PZ Vrbnik, we definitely recommend that you try zlahtina by other producers, such as Frajon, PZ Gospoja, Katunar and others, because the nuances in quality can be surprising.
It goes best with: ewe cheese, all kinds of fish and seafood specialties as well as white meat meals.
Wine serving temperature: 8-12° C.
