The story of the Krk bridge
Thu, Nov 6, 2008
They say that you put your finger in the sea and you are linked to the entire world. And if find yourself on Croatia’s largest island, you really are linked to the whole world. By sea, by air (Rijeka Airport is situated on the island of Krk), and by land or by the Krk Bridge.
As also befits the largest island in Croatia (although the most recent measurements show that Krk and Cres have the same surface area – 405 square kilometers), if you are the “road type”, you can reach Krk by the largest Croatian bridge. And not only Croatian! The length of the bridge is 1,430 meters, which includes a concrete arch of 390 meters. During its construction, it became the largest bridge of its type in the world. The bridge was built in 1980 and it changed life on the island. It is located at the northern end of the island of Krk, about 25 kilometers from the city of Krk.
The Krk Bridge is comprised of two arches that are joined on the small island of Sveti Marko, which was known in ancient times as Almis, meaning fertile. From its appearance today, it is difficult to understand how it got its name. It was also once a strategic point for monitoring the sea lanes.
We invite you to cross the bridge and come to the marvelous city of Krk. Bridges connect people…
