Tue, Jun 26, 2007
The texts on the gastronomic specialties of the Valamar destinations will be published on this blog on a regular basis. This is the initiatory post with Krk in the leading role. The island of Krk is in this sense famous for a number of specific dishes. At the beginning we should direct your attention to the most important common feature of the food that distinguishes the traditional Krk cooking. Namely, it is based on healthy and organic, natural ingredients in their original form. In the world of GMO and artificial surrogates of all kinds and types the real gourmets and aficionados of the natural and home-made food will know how to appreciate dishes that are prepared here.
Through the texts on the gastronomic specialties of the island of Krk and other destinations we will try to give you an insight into our tradition, and in this post we will in a few sentences describe one of the most delicious side dishes of Krk - šurlice.
Living on an island hasn’t always been easy, especially in times when there were no bridges connecting Krk with the mainland. This reflected on the diet of the people who lived on Krk. Very often it was based on food that at that time could be found in abundance, i.e. potatoes, polenta, Swiss chard…
A special place in this story is given to šurlice, a dish that on the island of Krk enjoys cult status. Šurlice is a home-made pasta prepared in a specific way, and in the restaurants and taverns of the island of Krk you get the opportunity to taste it in numerous creative combinations, with fish, shellfish and crabs, also with meat dishes, different kinds of cheese and sauces, and it is usually paired with the great Vrbnicka žlahtina, a light dry white wine, the authentic wine type of the island of Krk.
From the numerous dishes prepared with šurlice, we’d like to single out two fish dishes: šurlice with scampi and šurlice with squids, and one meat dish - šurlice with traditional lamb goulash (žvacet).
