On Kosljun 540 types of plants
Thu, Nov 20, 2008
The small island of Kosljun is a unique cultural and historical site that we recommend that you visit during a visit to Krk. It is situated on Puntarska draga, a little less than a kilometer from the village of Punat and only 200 meters from the coastline in the direction of Krk. It can be reached from Punat by small water taxis.
If you decide to take your own boat to the island, please be careful because the depth of the sea is only one and a half meters. The circumference of Kosljun is only one kilometer, while its highest point is just six meters above sea level. In this small area 540 types of plants and mushrooms have been registered, which is almost half of the number registered in Great Britain.
The island is dominated by a Franciscan monastery with the Church of the Annunciation, whose construction was bequeathed by the Frankopan counts of Krk. The monastery’s preserves the ethnographic collection of the island of Krk. It contains many objects of Krk’s fishermen and villagers, folk costumes from around the island and a numismatic collection. The atrium of the monastery has a collection of shells and stuffed animals.
The monastery also has a rich library of about 30,000 volumes, of which the oldest is an incunabula (a printed book dating from before 1501) from 1471. It also has one of three copies of Ptolemy’s Atlas, printed in Venice in 1511. We recommend that you wear clothing more appropriate than beach attire on a visit to the museum.
