Thu, Oct 9, 2008
The olive-tree, a centuries old species of plant, found at the coasts of the Mediterranean, has been well-known to people since Biblical times. An olive is a symbol of peace, fertility, strenght, health, and youth.
That the island of Krk is also ”God-given” for olive growth, can be seen in the fact that the extra-virgin olive oil is produced on the island. Right now in October, during the picking of olive-fruits in Krk, there is a traditional gastro-manifestation called ”Olive Days” from October 10 to october 19 in Punat.
During the Olive Days you can enjoy in gastronomical offer based on olives and olive oil. The Olive Days are closed with a folk festivity by making of ”mega padela šurlica zi ulikami ili frite zi ulikami”.
If you want to try yourself out in picking of olives, we invite you to join us in the Politin camp. In our camp we have a beautiful olive-grove. During the summertime, one can enjoy in the shade of olive-trees, and during the autumn in the fruits of olive-trees. After that, you can visit the oil refinery and watch the process of making olive oil.
On some islands, a black olive liqueur is also prepared from the olives. To make the liqueur, you need brandy, ripe black olives, sugar, lemon, orange and grapefruit crust, and clove. After mixing the ingredients, let it stay for 40 days in a container used for preparation. After that, you need to filter it and let it to grow ripe during the next six months.
