Olive days held on the island of Krk
Thu, Oct 8, 2009
October is an ideal month for you to set off toward the island of Krk. Why? Because that is the time when the olive season begins. The Krk people are proud of their olive trees and they can’t wait for the harvest to begin. This year’s 14th Olive Days, the oldest Kvarner Olive Days traditionally originating from the islands, took place from 2 to 11 October in the town of Punat.
For many years now this recognizable tourist and catering manifestation has educated the olive growers and caterers as well as the guests and visitors who are always welcome. For at least several centuries now people have been familiar with the olive and its benefits. Back in the ancient times, olive oil was know as “liquid gold” and it was used in reference to the gods since it was believed to have magical, medical and strengthening powers. Maybe that is the reason why the local people are so vital and have lived for many years.
This year’s Olive Days included a tour of the olive grove, participating in the harvest, learning about the production and tasting the Punat olive oil. We could conclude this post with an old Latin saying which glorifies this plant describing it as “oles prima arborum omnium est”, meaning “olive is the first among trees”.
