MIK Festival in the town of Krk
Wed, Jun 23, 2010
Third host of the Melodije Istre i Kvarnera Festival, which will be held on 20 June, is the town of Krk. This town is renowned as the cradle of Glagolitism and will host this festival for the sixteenth time. The MIK evenings will be traditionally held at the beautiful Square of Kamplin. The popularity of this event in this region lies perhaps mostly in the language being used – the lyrics are written in chakavian dialect, the oldest form of the Croatian language spoken in Istria and the coastline.
Almost all songs in the contest are written in chakavian dialect or a domesticated Italian dialect, and this takes the local folks back down the memory lane to the old, long-passed days. Each host town wants to present its best features both to domestic and foreign guests, packed in short, promotional video ads .
Well, the best features of Krk are vineyards, olives, beautiful beaches and the barren carst landscape. These are usually the themes of the most chakavian songs which then combined with a distinguishing melody, weave the tale of the old walls, salt reefs or another symbol of the Mediterranean identity. We send this invitation to a weekend full of activities to all people who wish to get introduced to the charms of this region along with a sip of the žlahtina wine and taste of early figs.
