Island of Krk

Christmas! The most beautiful time of year. The air is filled with warm anticipation. A new candle is lit every Sunday and now and then a new Christmas decoration pops up reminding us that our favourite holiday is drawing near. The house gives out the scent of the first pastry delicacies (fritule - battered pastry) being prepared as well as the fish specialties, homemade soup, pasta (surlice) and gnocchi, lamb specialties and other dishes.

The old customs of celebrating Christmas go hand in hand with the aroma of the sweet Krk delicacies. The harmony of nature and man is best emphasized in the area poor with natural resources. Rocky soil which is always “thirsty”, small surface area surrounded by the sea, strong winds, centuries-old isolation and shortage of water resulted in great efforts put in by the islanders (Boduli) to use all natural resources in a way that this meagre wealth is never fully used up.

The tradition of genuine Mediterranean cooking is still present in the Krk villages and it is kept alive by the families who have continued to live their lives just as their predecessors did. Some of them decided to share their wealth with the guests in search of the original island of Krk as it was back in the days. During your visit to this “golden island” we recommend trying the food which reflects the old and healthy Krk way of life. Merry Christmas!
