Krk – a town for almost 3000 years
Thu, Oct 30, 2008
While many bigger and more famous present-day towns were nothing but a part of nature, Krk was already a town 3000 years ago. Considering the number of its inhabitants, it is a smaller town, but judging by its historical richness, it is certainly big. ”Splendidisima civitas Curictarum” – which could be translated as the most splendid town of inhabitants of Krk, can be found on an ancient stone inscription dating from the 6th century. But Krk is splendid even today.
It has kept its heritage until the present day. And a proof that a stone is an excellent keeper of the past, cen be found in town-walls of Krk. The records state that the town-walls existed even in the first century B. C. Today’s town-walls mostly date from the medieval times, but the parts from the Roman settling of the town still exist.
The entrance to the old town was possible through four gates. The big town gate leads to so- called ”Vela placa” (Big Square), while small town gate, or ”piccola porta”, is the only one opening towards town waterfront. On the eastern side of the town there is Gate of Liberty, or so-called gate ”pizanska”, and also the upper gate. Above all town gates, there is a stone tablet with the figure of St. Quirinus, the protector of town of Krk.
As a curiosity, we would like to single out a story about fruit-tree called žižula (Chinese date, or Zizyphus jujuba). The plant originates from Asia, and belongs to the most important fruit-trees of that part of the world. On Croatian islands, and on krk, too, it has been grown for very long time.
