Gastronomy of the “Golden Isle” Krk
Thu, Oct 16, 2008
Someone once said the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. You too will fall in love with the Island of Krk if you taste some of the delicacies offered on the richly laden tables of Krk. On the “golden isle” with such rich nature, you can enjoy prsut (smoked ham) and homemade sheep cheese, homemade pasta – surlice, the well known tasty Krk lamb baked under a peka (dome shaped metal lid), various Mediterranean manestra (traditional thick vegetable soup) with different spices and of course you must try our specialties from our sea.
Aside from this you can also enjoy desserts in which dried figs, almonds, walnuts, sheep and cow cheese and ricotta cheese dominate.
After a good meal, a good wine is essential and of course we recommend Vrbnicka Zlahtina, while as an aperitif you can taste local rakija (brand): dropovica (grape brandy), travarica (brandy with essential herbs on the rocky terrain of the Krk island) or orahovica (walnut brandy).
You can taste all of these in the Hotel Valamar Koralj, Krk restaurants and konobe (wine cellars). For those who don’t know, konobe are the most often ground floor or basement premises of old stone houses in which due to an always constant temperatures groceries and beverages were stored. In these konobe there was an area for socialising, in which many life-long friendships were made while tasting wine, slicing prsut (smoked ham) or anchovies.
We are certain that some of these meals will spice up your holiday and you will want to visit this heaven on earth again and again.
