Island of Krk

7 & Island of Krk(1) Did you know that there is a interesting connection between the tradition of the island of Krk and the number 7? For example, the 7th century, when Croats joined the Illyrian tribes of Liburnians and Japods, presents a real historical turning point. This is only one example for the significance of the number „seven“, here are some other: Krk was historically divided into seven castles (kaštel) that nowadays present 7 districts.

And these are: Omišalj, Malinska, Vrbnik, Dobrinj, Punat i Baška. Furthermore, there are exactly seven language varieties of the local Chakavian dialect (?akavski) used by the majority of people living on Krk, seven preserved habits, seven dances and exactly seven kinds of traditional national costumes.

Frankopans(2) Did you know that the Dukes of Krk (Frankopans) were the only family on the Adriatic islands that had developed their influence and power in the European context. Dukes of Krk increased their economic strength by collecting levies from their subjects, and have also with various statutes strived to strengthen old traditions and preserve their rights. In the year 1288 they drew up the Vinodol Code (Vinodolski zakonik), and in the year 1388 the Vrbnik Statute (Vrbni?ki statut).

As a result of their economic strength and social prestige, many opponents scrambled for their preference, and in that period they were so strong that no authority, except for Turkey, could jeopardize them.
They originated from Vrbnik, whereas they had expanded their properties also onto mainland, to the area of Primorje and Lika, and at the peak of their power they owned territory half the size of Croatia today.

(3) Did you know that in the ancient times Krk was called “Insula Aurea” (the golden island) due to its richness of sea and soil.
