The Festival of “Little Plavac” (Plavac Mali)
Fri, Oct 17, 2008
The Festival of Little Plavac (Plavac Mali), our best known and most recognized grape variety, will be held for the first time this year. It will bring together winemakers and viticulturists, the producers of this highly appreciated grape variety, from throughout Dubrovnik-Neretva and Split-Dalmatia Counties. The Festival will be held in the Revelin Fortress in Dubrovnik on 17 and 18 October 2008.
Winemakers and viticulturists of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County have something to be proud of because their county has the most trademarked quality wines. More than 2,000 hectares are planted with vines, and we don’t even have to speak about the area’s history and tradition. The Peljesac wine-growing area has 950 hectares under cultivation, 90 percent of which is for plavac mali. In this most well-known and most important wine-growing area of Dubrovnik-Neretva County there are about 40 wine producers who make 54 quality and 34 outstanding wines. Plavac mali is a synonym for the Peljesac wine-growing area, and it is also the highest quality native grape variety of Dalmatia. Dinga? is the first Croatian outstanding wine to be trademarked – in 1960.
In addition to the exhibition portion of the festival, visitors and exhibitors will also have the opportunity to participate in and listen to presentations by experts in the field of enology and agro-culture. The presentations will focus on the historical development of wine-growing and on the branding of wines, but there will be those with an advisory character. The program of the Festival will be enriched by the gastro-enological experience and knowledge of the gastro columnist, Veljko Barbieri.
There will also be an accompanying cultural and entertainment program, such as an exhibition of photographs and formal dinners with appearances by top musical artists.
