The city walls of Dubrovnik – the second most attractive promenade in the world

Rome has the Colosseum, London has the Tower, and Dubrovnik, even though it is so much smaller, has something equally magnificent – the city walls of Dubrovnik… not only the trademark of Dubrovnik, but Croatia.
The city walls of Dubrovnik are everyday attraction during the whole year, and are certainly worth admiring and walking. A distinguished British journal, ”The Sunday Times”, has recently published a rank-list of fifty the most beautiful walking tours in the world, and the second place, following Gencoe Hill in Scotland, belongs to the city walls of Dubrovnik. The two kilometer city walls are passable in their whole lenght, and consist of the wall and three fortifications: Min?eta, Bokar, and St. John, along with two freestanding fortifications, Lovrijenac and Revelin.
Two earthquakes, wars and tribulations didn’t harm them. The monumental system of fortifications used to keep the enemies of the republic of Dubrovnik at distance, and today the very city walls attract numerous tourists in Dubrovnik. Because of them, Dubrovnik radiates with something mysterious and fabulous, which gives it a certain patos of the past, something that makes us think that the past was much more beautiful than the present.
When you climb atop of the city walls during summer, you can enjoy in a beautiful panorama which opens to a green islet of Lokrum and a blue open sea from one side, and colourful rooftops of Dubrovnik from the other. And during winter, when a cold wind blows from the North, you will experience the courage of city guards of old, who fixedly watched the hazy horizon, expecting the enemy’s flags, but also the courage of young girls of Dubrovnik who with heart-sickness asked the waves when their beloved ones would return.
