Picasso in Dubrovnik
Fri, Jul 4, 2008
In recent years Dubrovnik has become a popular host of major cultural events. After last year’s exhibit of Faberge eggs in the Rector’s Palace, this summer there will be an exhibit of graphics in the Gallery of Art by Pablo Picasso, the greatest artist of the 20th - painter, ceramicist, innovator and sculptor. The opening of the exhibit is expected to be on 8 July, two days before the beginning of the 59th Dubrovnik Summer Festival. The exhibit will last until the end of September.
The exhibit will include three representative series of Picasso’s graphics: Suite Vollard, La Tauromaquia and Suite 156. The value of the collection is estimated at almost one million euros.
Suite Vollard, which is esteemed in art criticism as the most important graphics series of the 20th century, was completed between 1930 and 1937. It numbers 100 works, 89 of which will be on display in Dubrovnik. Picasso drew the inspiration for its passionate scenes filled with an erotic atmosphere, for which the series is noted, from his romantic connection at that time with Marie-Therese Walter.
La Tauromaquia (1957), which is frequently compared with the graphics of Picasso’s countryman Francisco de Goya, numbers 26 graphics in aquatint depicting bullfights, a hallmark of Spanish culture.
The graphics from Suite 156 appeared in the last years of Picasso’s life and represent a kind of “graphics testament”. Twenty examples will be on display in Dubrovnik.
Join us and be a part of the major summer cultural fever that will grip Dubrovnik.
