Dubrovnik

The last three days of Dubrovnik Summer Festival, whose beginning we announced on our blog, were dedicated to the notorious Dubrovnik comedian, Marin Držic. The show “Dum Marinu u pohode” (“Visiting Father Marin”) was a kind of introductory event to the celebration of 500th anniversary of the birth of Marin Držic. The show was put on by the students attending the Master course of the Zagreb Academy of Dramatic Arts and is directed by Joško Juvancic. “Visiting Father Marin” is a compilation of texts from pastorals and comedies written by Marin Držic: “Venus and Adonis”, “A tale of Stanac”, “Tirena” and “Dundo Maroje” and was performed before a full house.

The events that will follow in the next days on Dubrovnik Summer Festival will be of music, folklore and theatre nature. Today (3rd August) the Vienna Stringquartet led by Jasminka Stancul playing the piano will perform in the Rector’s Palace playing the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert and Giacomo Puccini.

In the same time, Lindjo Folk Ensemble will traditionally perform on the Revelin Fort Terrace. For this year’s exhibition, the Ensemble prepared an enriched repertoire with many Croatian traditional dances. Music will not lack either as Dalmatian klapas (vocal groups a cappella) and tamburitza orchestra will join the dancers on stage.

Saturday, 4th August, the Programme of Dubrovnik Summer Festival continues with the performance of the Zadar Chamber orchestra, directed by the conductor Ivan Repušic, and the famous violinist, Stefan Milenkovic. We will hear the works of great musicians as Antonio Vivaldi, Niccolò Paganini and Benjamin Britten. For those in the mood for a theatre play (Saturday, 21.00), the play “Equinox”, an adaptation of Ivo Vojnovic drama will be staged on the small island of Lokrum and in the atmosphere of an “ambiental theatre”. The play is directed by the above mentioned Joško Juvancic and will be performing on the same venue and in the same time (21.30) during the next three days (5th, 6th and 7th August).
