Four days of the Dubrovnik Carnival

Mon, Feb 15, 2010

Dubrovnik

The carnival festivities which had arrived to Dubrovnik from Italy were banned by the church for some time in the past because they were considered to be “distorted” and “obscene”, but they were held and the tradition was kept until today in spite of that.

The Town of Dubrovnik Tourist Board and the town of Dubrovnik are organizing a series of carnival programmes. The manifestation “Four days of the Dubrovnik Carnival” will be held on Stradun and in the Revelin Fort from 13 to 16 February and people of all ages will participate.

After the competition of preparing the traditional dish šporki makaruli on Saturday, the youngest Dubrovnik carnival participants and entire masked families will gather at Stradun on Sunday. The masked school day, which is always Monday, will gather several thousands of children and young people, where in a large, cheerful procession all creativity and imagination of the youngest ones will be expressed. Stradun will come alive and shine in the colours of all seasons, animated characters and current affairs.

The Nazbilj Association with all its satirical depictions of the everyday life, the county carnival from the nearby County of Dubrovnik with the current satirical masks and accompanying contents, veljun – a costumed ball at the City Coffee House (Gradska kavana) and Theatre, the exhibitions and the carnival masks workshop in the Dubrovnik galleries – they are all a part of the Dubrovnik carnival festivities.

Feel the special atmosphere of humour, laughter, joy, happiness and ridicule, the essential elements of the Dubrovnik carnival festivities and parties. If you are in Dubrovnik, join us by all means.
