Dubrovnik

Revelin Fortress - DubrovnikThe Revelin fortress is one of the most important Dubrovnik sights. Built in the middle of the XVI century with the purpose of defending the city, and it was, historically speaking, a pretty turbulent period, an age when in Dubrovnik threat of Venice attack was felt once again. The original project of the Revelin fortress was built to the design of the architect Anton Ferramolino, sent by the Spanish admiral Dorio, a great friend of the Republic.

The impressive building was finished fairly quickly because, due to the circumstances and reasons at the moment, it was made a priority ahead of all the other public works and buildings in the city of Dubrovnik. The purpose was to use it as soon as possible for the defence of the city port and the least protected Eastern points of access by land to the city. It performed its role in an excellent way. The fortress was unconquerable.

Today the fortress of Revelin is property of the city of Dubrovnik and is being used as a multipurpose space. In 2003 the reconstruction works on the fortress were completed. The reconstruction has preserved the authentic appearance of the building, while satisfying high technological requirements of today (air conditioning, internet, elevator, fire fighting system). Today this space is a stage for numerous events, currently hosting the musical programs of the Dubrovnik Summer Games that we’ve already covered in one of the previous posts.

The total surface covered by the Revelin fortress is 3500 m2 divided on four floors. First floor consists of several smaller spaces intended to be used in relation to the events taking place at the floor above or on the top floor terrace. Here you can find the changing rooms, toilet facilities, while on the second floor there is a big hall equipped for events (see pictures). Probably the most impressive space in the entire fortress is on the top floor – a large terrace of 837 m2, and the place is ideal for organizing cultural and artistic programs. You can find pictures of the terrace here.
