Croatia in historical panoramic photographs
Fri, Nov 6, 2009
In the exhibition hall of the Etnographic Museum - granary “Rupe” in Dubrovnik, a guest exhibition “Croatia in Historical Panoramic Photographs” from the Zagreb City Museum has been opened. The authors of the exhibition are Slavko sterk and Miljenko Smokvina and the art designer is Zeljko Kovacic.
The visitors of this exhibition will have the opportunity of seeing some sixty postcards and photos of Zagreb, Opatija, Rijeka, Dubrovnik and other towns taken in the period from 1860 to 1930. The panoramic photos such as these are usually narrow and long. They give us the opportunity of gaining instant insight into the view which we, due to the physiological limitations of the eye, cannot see with one look.
Numerous well-known and excellent photographers took panoramic photographs. Each town or area had its own distinguished master which took panoramic photographs. Zagreb’s representatives are Julius Hühn, A. Ivan Standl and Ludwig Schwoiser. Alios Berger is known for his work in Osijek, Ilario Carposio and G. Petricich in Rijeka, Tomaso Burato in Zadar, Petar Zink and Luciano Morpurgo in Split, Franz Laforest and J. Tosovic in Dubrovnik and ciril Metod Ivekovic for the photographs taken all across Croatia, but mostly on the Adriatic Coast.
The exhibition is open every day until 24 November, apart from Tuesdays, from 9 am to 4 pm and it is on display on the ground floor of the “Rupe” granary – Etnographic Museum.
