Alberto Giacometti - the sculptor of 20th century soul
Fri, Jul 30, 2010
“Alberto Giacometti – the sculptor of 20th century soul” is an exhibition set up by the Dubrovnik Art Gallery, one in the series of events following the Picasso’s graphics, artistic presentation of Jan Fabre or the panoramic exhibition “American Graphics from 1960 to this day”.
The Dubrovnik Giacometti exhibition will display 169 artist’s works: drawings, graphics, the lithographic cycle “Paris without end” which came to being in the period from 1958 to 1965, paintings and three-dimensional works. Apart from Giacometti’s works, the exhibition will also include 18 photographs by Ernst Scheidegger, a Swiss photographer, who was close to the great sculptor and followed him with his camera in numerous everyday and creative situations, recording his art.
Although he was not inclined to pretentious requests of being an art leader and interpreter of his era, Giacometti and his obsessive focus on several simple motifs of the human character did mark the era; those motifs were anxiety, trepidation, global tragedies, tortured 20th century soul… No one embodied them in such a powerful way as this modest, but great man and artist. Giacometti became internationally known already during his lifetime and he became an artist of international significance.
The exhibition of Giacometti’s works, one of the best known 20th century European artists, will be open for public at the Dubrovnik Art Gallery until 3 October, remaining the central artistic event in Dubrovnik during the summer.
