60th Dubrovnik Summer Festival
Thu, Jul 9, 2009
This year, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, traditionally held from 10 July to 25 August, will once again gather more than 2000 artists from around the world who will put more than seventy drama, music, dance, visual arts and film programmes on stage at a dozen different locations. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is the most important and the most representative festival manifestation in Croatia as well as a cultural event of the greatest significance. The particularity of this year’s manifestation is the jubilee – the 60th anniversary of the festival which will turn Dubrovnik into a unique stage.
Into its jubilee edition, Dubrovnik Summer Festival has introduced a VIP programme which is completed by an opera gala ball conducted by Vjekoslav Sutej, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra conductor, on 11 July and Beethoven’s 9th symphony performed by the Philharmonia of the Nations Orchestra and Ivan Goran Kovacic Academic Choir conducted by Justus Franz, on the festival closing day.
As part of the drama programme, the Danish prince Hamlet will climb the Lovrijenac Fort once again in a performance by the Festival Drama Ensemble and directed by Ivica Kuncevic. One of the greatest directors of our time, Peter Brook, will also arrive to Dubrovnik to open the drama programme with his adaptation of Shakespeare’s sonnets. “Taraca“, an emblematic work by Ivo Vojnovic, is back on the programme and, as part of the festival international co-production efforts between Avignon and Vienna, the well-known Jan Fabre will present his play “Orgy of Tolerance“ to the public.
Once again, the unique beauty of the Dubrovnik streets, squares, parks, palaces, islands or medieval forts will become a proud and equal co-author to the greatest world artists.
